Internships/Job Shadows
The week of my internships was very insightful and educational. I learned a lot about different fields and how they function. Exploring these different careers helped me shape the directions of where I want to go in life. At the beginning of the week, my goal was to find out which job I preferred out of the five mentors that I shadowed. I hoped to learn about each job and how they deal with other departments. Since I really want to direct myself into the marketing field, I wanted to find jobs either within it, or coordinating with it. My top two favorites were my internship with Anne Clark learning about interior design and the process, and my internship with Demesha Hill learning about events planning. All of my internships were very eventful and I learned a lot but I wish I would have had the opportunity to shadow graphic designers and advertisers. I love design in general and I feel like that would be the best direction for me to go. My goal over the next four years from this experience is to have more and more internships exploring different fields to find the one job I absolutely want to do. Learning about these different careers have given me a good experience that I will always value.
Demesha Hill's job title is Janus Foundation & Comm Relations Mgr and she manages running Janus events with her coworker, Moira McNeil. She also deals with running funds and donations to organizations. Both of these jobs really interested me because they both focused on creative designs and being able to create a great room whether it be for a house or for a simple party.
Overall my favorite internship was with Anne Clark. Since I had a small previous history with her (working on the EDGE designs and painting), I felt a closer connection with her. We both have very clear pictures in our head of what we want and have good explanations for choices. What I did with Anne was a very fun activity learning about the process of interior design. We went out and scouted houses looking at bedrooms. We chose a bedroom and took the measurements of the room. After that we discussed what type of age the person is, the color scheme prefered and what would work well based on space provided and financial budget. I choose to have the room be a 9 year old girl who liked the colors pastel yellow, light gray, white and hints of teal. Once I chose my main room points, I started to focus of decorations. With lots of shopping and managing prices I found lots of decorations and furniture. This activity helped me get a very good glimpse into the world of interior design and I loved it. This would definitely be a career path that I would love to do.
At Janus Henderson Investors, I worked with a women named Sarah and her team. I learned about events coordinating and how they come up with products. Sarah’s job is to run booths at conferences, managing what types of giveaways they want to have. They discussed having water bottles, notebooks, pens, pop-sockets, phone cases and much more. I got to sit in on meetings learning about what she deals with. I found it all very interesting and would consider it as a future career path. In the afternoon of that day, I got to help her and her team alter stickers on their book, changing it from their current name, Janus Capital, to their new name, Janus Henderson. I also worked on correcting dates on tickets to one of Janus’s Summer Events. This day was very fun and entertaining because I saw and learned about a different part to coordinating events and products.
When I worked with Alyse, she spoke to me about how she manages websites, and updating information daily. This was not exactly what I wanted to do but was still interesting to learn about. I feel like I was able to learn about a lot of different fields and how they all connect to each other.
Working with my other mentor, Danielle was a good experience for me to have, but I learned that her job is something that I would not want to do when I am older. I see myself in more of a creative side, rather than dealing with numbers and stock.
